Availability and statistics checked 20 October 2026, approximately 1:00 pm Adelaide time. Injury timeframes are estimates, not confirmed return dates. The numbers below are EuroLeague match statistics, not Buckets fantasy points.
Anadolu Efes have another guard injury to manage just as the EuroLeague calendar starts to squeeze. P.J. Dozier hurt his back in Friday's 85–70 win at Žalgiris Kaunas, and the club expects him to be unavailable for approximately two to three weeks. The 18 October club statement, reported by Anadolu Agency, says treatment has begun following medical examinations. It does not provide a precise clearance date. That distinction matters: this is a substantial absence to plan around, not permission to mark a particular November fixture as his guaranteed return.
The headline consequence for EuroLeague fantasy is not simply that a starting guard has vacated minutes. Efes already had to reorganise after Mike James underwent Achilles surgery, and Cameron Payne, Matthew Strazel and Jordan Loyd have each handled meaningful parts of the offence. Dozier's absence narrows the rotation again, but the official 16 October match box score offers a better starting point than assuming one replacement inherits everything.
What actually happened in Kaunas
Dozier started against Žalgiris, scored five points and played 10 minutes 32 seconds before his evening ended. Efes still won by 15, with Strazel named the club's match MVP after 19 points, four assists and three rebounds. The club's match report describes a wire-to-wire win, not a desperate late comeback. The result proves Efes can win one game after losing Dozier early; it does not establish how their next several rotations will work.
| Efes player | Minutes vs Žalgiris | Points | Assists | Relevant context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matthew Strazel | 24:05 | 19 | 4 | Team-leading points; 22 PIR |
| Cameron Payne | 20:51 | 16 | 4 | Three made triples; three turnovers |
| Jordan Loyd | 28:34 | 2 | 6 | Team-high assists despite poor shooting |
| P.J. Dozier | 10:32 | 5 | 0 | Injured during the game |
Every figure in that table comes from Efes' published player scores. Loyd's two points are not a typo: he shot 1-of-7 from the field but still supplied six assists. That is exactly why guard evaluation needs to separate creation, minutes and shooting efficiency. An extra scoring opportunity is not necessarily an extra playmaking opportunity, and a low-scoring night need not mean a player has lost his role.
Strazel has the clearest evidence, but not a guaranteed promotion
Strazel's case is stronger than a one-night points headline. In Efes' previous EuroLeague game, a 101–93 loss to Bayern on 14 October, he logged 29:07 and seven assists while Payne played 20:26 and scored 18. Buckets previously examined that Strazel–Payne split. The follow-up in Kaunas — 24:05 and four assists for Strazel, 20:51 and four for Payne — is a second piece of evidence that both remain central to coach Pablo Laso's backcourt decisions.
Fantasy interpretation: Strazel deserves the closest monitoring in leagues where he can be acquired or started. He has now produced two consecutive useful on-ball performances, although his exact scoring efficiency and playing time can still fluctuate. Do not turn his 19-point Kaunas outing into a projected nightly score. The more durable signal is that he has been entrusted with substantial creation in two different games.
Payne is not an automatic downgrade just because Strazel led the scoring. He hit three of seven threes against Žalgiris and scored 16 in less than 21 minutes. His offensive ceiling remains visible, but the turnovers and relatively modest court time keep his floor less secure than a headline scoring average suggests. Fantasy interpretation: hold or evaluate him on the role you drafted him for; avoid claiming a guaranteed 30-minute workload or an uncontested share of James' former possessions.
Loyd may be the most interesting category-dependent case. His 28:34 was the longest of the three guards' Kaunas workloads, and he created six assists despite scoring only twice. That combination could suit formats that reward assists and playing time more than raw points, but it is not evidence that he will suddenly become Efes' leading scorer. Managers should check their own league's scoring settings, and avoid treating EuroLeague PIR as interchangeable with Buckets fantasy totals.
Why the timetable matters before Round 7
The official Efes fixture list has the club hosting Beşiktaş on Thursday 22 October, visiting Hapoel Tel Aviv on Wednesday 28 October, then hosting Panathinaikos on Friday 30 October. All three games sit close to or within the club's two-to-three-week estimate from 18 October, but the exact availability decision belongs to Efes' medical and coaching staff. Dozier should be treated as unavailable for the immediate planning horizon; each later game still needs a fresh team update.
The club's 2026–27 roster includes other perimeter options such as Daron 'Fatts' Russell and Erkan Yılmaz, but a roster listing is not evidence of a promotion into Dozier's minutes. Russell did not play against Žalgiris; neither did Yılmaz. Likewise, the injury does not by itself establish a new starter, positional eligibility in Buckets or a specific waiver availability rate across private leagues.
For deeper EuroLeague Draft formats, the actionable watchlist is therefore Strazel for repeatable creation, Payne for scoring with turnover risk, Loyd for assists and minutes, and the remaining guards only after a confirmed rotation change. Dozier should not be left in an active line-up while ruled out, subject to each league's roster rules. If your competition has injured reserve, check whether the player's designation qualifies rather than assuming it does.
Buckets' verdict
Efes have already shown they can share the ball without Mike James and survive one disrupted night without Dozier. What they have not shown is that the missing minutes will settle permanently on one player. The next two EuroLeague team sheets, starting with Beşiktaş, are more useful than an imagined usage percentage. Watch who starts, who closes, how many possessions each guard initiates and whether the Strazel–Payne balance persists. The injury is confirmed; the fantasy hierarchy remains a test in progress.
