Cameron Payne Scored 18, but Strazel Played 29 Minutes: The Efes EuroLeague Fantasy Split

Cameron Payne hit four threes against Bayern, yet five turnovers, five fouls and Matthew Strazel’s 29-minute, seven-assist night complicate the fantasy picture. Here is what Efes’ guard rotation actually showed before Friday’s Žalgiris trip.

Anadolu Efes did not lose to Bayern Munich because Cameron Payne failed to score. He supplied 18 points and four three-pointers in 20 minutes and 26 seconds. The more revealing numbers were the ones alongside that scoring: five turnovers, five personal fouls and a backcourt colleague, Matthew Strazel, playing nearly nine minutes longer. For EuroLeague fantasy managers, this is a role story before it is a scoring story.

The official Anadolu Efes match centre confirms Bayern's 101–93 road win on Wednesday, 14 October 2026. Efes have now played their first game of a two-game EuroLeague week and visit Žalgiris on Friday, 16 October. The numbers below reflect the completed Bayern match only, checked on 15 October 2026, 6:57 pm Adelaide time; they are not projections for the next fixture.

The guard minutes tell a different story from the points

These figures come from the club's published player scores, rather than an estimated fantasy feed. Payne shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, but his five turnovers and five fouls limited the all-round value of an otherwise efficient scoring night. Strazel, by contrast, led Efes with seven assists while remaining on court for 29:07. That does not prove Strazel has permanently overtaken Payne; it shows who handled the larger workload in this particular game.

Payne's offence arrived quickly. Four made threes on seven attempts is a genuine shooting contribution, not an empty 18 points. But the distinction between points scored and fantasy value created matters. A player who generates points while giving possessions back through turnovers can be more volatile than the headline suggests. In scoring formats that penalise turnovers or reward assists, Strazel's creation and Payne's mistakes may narrow or reverse the apparent gap. Managers should check their own competition's scoring rules rather than treating EuroLeague points or PIR as identical to Buckets fantasy scoring.

Mike James' absence creates opportunity, not a guaranteed monopoly

Efes signed Payne on 3 October through the end of the 2026–27 season, according to the club's official announcement. The club also confirmed that Mike James underwent Achilles tendon repair surgery after being injured against Crvena Zvezda. Those developments explain why another proven ball-handler was needed. They do not establish that Payne must inherit all of James' minutes or usage.

The Bayern rotation is a useful warning against that assumption. Coach Pablo Laso started Payne and Strazel together, and Jordan Loyd still logged more than 21 minutes. Russell also played, albeit briefly. Multiple guards are involved in creation, while Dario Šarić contributed 21 points and Bruno Fernando had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Efes' offence is not simply one vacant star role waiting to be transferred intact to a new signing. The club's match report confirms the result; the individual production is documented in its match centre.

There is a further reason to resist overreacting. Five fouls are an obvious constraint on any guard's minutes in a 40-minute game. We cannot separate the precise effect of fouls, tactical choices and conditioning from the box score alone. It would be a mistake to claim Payne has been demoted based on 20:26, just as it would be a mistake to promote him to an automatic high-minute fantasy starter based on 18 points. The relevant evidence is the combination of minutes, ball security, fouls and the continued involvement of Strazel and Loyd.

The next test arrives quickly in Kaunas

Efes' official fixture list has them visiting Žalgiris on Friday, 16 October. That turnaround matters for two reasons. First, Laso has little time between EuroLeague games to settle the guard hierarchy. Second, a second box score will tell us whether Strazel's 29-minute workload and Payne's 20-minute outing were driven by this matchup or are part of a repeatable split. A single game cannot answer that question, but a second game can materially improve the evidence.

The clearest checkpoints are straightforward: Does Payne again start? Can he reach the mid-to-high 20s in minutes without foul trouble? Does he reduce turnovers while retaining meaningful on-ball creation? Does Strazel remain the primary assist source? And does Loyd's role stay above 20 minutes? Those are more useful questions than whether Payne can repeat four threes, a shooting outcome that is inherently less stable from night to night.

The fantasy call: watch closely, do not chase blindly

Payne — upside with a warning label. He has demonstrated that he can score efficiently in this offence, and the long-term absence of James gives him a credible route to substantial work. But a 20-minute, five-turnover, five-foul game is not enough evidence to buy into a guaranteed lead-guard workload. Treat him as a player to reassess after the Žalgiris fixture, particularly in leagues where turnovers are costly.

Strazel — the stronger immediate minutes signal. Seven assists in 29:07 is a meaningful single-game creation result. It puts him firmly on the watchlist for managers assessing assists and playing time. The caution is equally important: four turnovers and four fouls mean he was not flawless, and one 29-minute game does not lock in a season-long floor.

Loyd and Russell — different levels of certainty. Loyd's 21:40 and relatively clean one-turnover night keep him relevant in a crowded guard group, while Russell's 8:32 makes an immediate fantasy promotion difficult to justify without fresh evidence. Neither should be assigned an invented ownership percentage, salary movement or projected score.

Bottom line: Bayern exposed a real Efes guard split, not a settled pecking order. Payne's scoring is worth respecting; Strazel's minutes and assists are worth tracking; the next match should decide whether either signal deserves an actual fantasy move. This is a completed-game analysis, not a claim that Friday's selection or availability is already confirmed.
