Jalen Williams Looks Sharp in Thunder Preseason Return

Jalen Williams delivered 16 points and six assists in 19 minutes against Milwaukee, an encouraging return after an injury-hit season — but not a promise of his regular-season workload.

Jalen Williams gave Oklahoma City an encouraging first look at his comeback on Wednesday, scoring 16 points and handing out six assists in 19 minutes against Milwaukee. For fantasy managers, the important development was not the Thunder’s 128-126 preseason loss: it was Williams back on the floor and contributing across the box score after injuries disrupted his previous season.

Williams shot 8-for-11, adding three rebounds and two steals in his preseason debut at Paycom Center. His production came entirely in the first half, before Oklahoma City rested most of its starters after the break, according to CBS Sports’ game update. NBC Sports independently reported the same statistical line.

Efficient inside the arc, active beyond scoring

Williams missed all three of his three-point attempts, meaning he made all eight of his two-point shots. That is a strong opening contribution without relying on a hot night from long range.

The six assists and two steals were just as useful as the scoring. They showed Williams influencing possessions beyond his own shot attempts — the sort of multi-category contribution that makes his availability important to fantasy managers.

Oklahoma City led 82-64 at half-time before Milwaukee recovered against the Thunder’s second-half rotation. That context matters when reading both the result and Williams’ minutes: his night ended alongside other established players, rather than his absence after the break being evidence of a new injury problem.

Coach Mark Daigneault’s assessment was similarly encouraging. In postgame comments reported by Thunder Wire, he praised Williams’ confidence and aggression at both ends, describing his energy as contagious within the team.

A return after a disrupted season

Williams was limited to 33 regular-season appearances in 2025-26. Wrist and hamstring problems repeatedly interrupted his availability, with The Oklahoman’s preseason reporting detailing the wrist issue and strains in both hamstrings. NBC Sports’ season preview also recorded just five playoff appearances.

His absence from Tuesday’s preseason opener should not be confused with another injury setback. CBS Sports reported that absence as non-injury-related, before Williams took the floor against the Bucks the following night.

Wednesday therefore provided something more useful than another projected return date: an actual game appearance, with efficient scoring and contributions as a passer and defender.

Fantasy takeaway: encouragement, not a workload guarantee

This was a positive availability update, not proof that every concern from last season has disappeared. One exhibition cannot establish season-long durability, and 19 preseason minutes do not confirm either a regular-season restriction or an unrestricted workload.

For fantasy managers assessing Williams, the distinction is straightforward. His first outing supports a more encouraging view of his return, while his subsequent availability and minutes remain worth monitoring. There is no need to project Wednesday’s shooting efficiency across a full season to recognise the value of seeing him back and playing effectively.
