Fred VanVleet’s return gave Houston more than a welcome injury update. It gave the Rockets a starting point guard producing again: 17 points, seven assists and two steals in 24 minutes during Friday’s 135–117 preseason win over the Dallas Mavericks in Macao.

Playing his first NBA game in more than 17 months, VanVleet started, knocked down five three-pointers and committed just one turnover. For Houston — and fantasy managers assessing his comeback — the meaningful development was the combination of a substantial opening workload and productive play, not simply his presence on the court.

The NBA’s official recap confirmed Houston’s win, while the game’s box score recorded VanVleet’s 24-minute outing, two rebounds and plus-15 finish.

Five threes to launch the comeback

VanVleet supplied Houston’s first nine points through three consecutive makes from beyond the arc, according to Rockets Wire’s game report. He finished five-of-12 from three-point range, with all 12 of his field-goal attempts coming from outside the arc, and added two free throws.

The shooting offered an immediate reminder of his floor-spacing value. The seven assists against one turnover were just as relevant to a team restoring an experienced organiser to its backcourt.

This was his first game since Houston’s 2025 playoff exit, rather than a 17-month absence caused entirely by the knee injury. VanVleet suffered a torn right ACL ahead of the 2025–26 preseason and subsequently missed that entire season, as reported by The Athletic and Sportsnet.

Houston gets its first backcourt sample

The Rockets started VanVleet alongside Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Şengün, according to Yahoo Sports’ game coverage. That gave Houston an actual game setting in which to assess its returning lead guard with the rest of the starting group.

Our earlier look at VanVleet’s expected return and Houston’s backcourt test centred on what his availability could change. Friday supplied the first evidence: he started next to Thompson and handled enough offensive responsibility to deliver seven assists while taking 12 shots.

That does not establish the final distribution of ball-handling duties. Nor does Houston’s plus-15 margin during his minutes isolate his individual impact. It does show that his comeback began with a meaningful role rather than a brief cameo.

Fantasy takeaway: production, with workload still to prove

For category-league managers, VanVleet contributed across assists, three-pointers and steals in his first outing back. Those are useful signals, particularly when accompanied by 24 minutes on court.

The caution is about extrapolation. One preseason appearance cannot establish his regular-season minutes, availability across a full schedule or sustained shooting efficiency. Five made threes are an encouraging result, not a baseline to project forward.

Thompson’s place alongside VanVleet also matters: this opening lineup showed the two sharing the backcourt, rather than one replacing the other. Any broader fantasy judgement on Houston’s guards should wait for more evidence about minutes and possession responsibilities.

The next checkpoint is whether VanVleet can repeat a meaningful workload as preseason progresses. For now, Houston has moved from anticipating his return to evaluating it — with a productive 24-minute performance as the starting point.
