Fred VanVleet’s Expected Return Gives Houston’s Backcourt a Real Preseason Test

Fred VanVleet is expected to play in one of Houston’s two Macao exhibitions against Dallas after missing the 2025–26 season. His return puts the Rockets’ guard roles in focus, but does not yet establish a full workload.

Fred VanVleet is expected to play in one of Houston’s two preseason games against Dallas in Macao, giving the Rockets their first game look at their veteran point guard since the 2025 playoffs — and an early test of how their backcourt fits together again.

VanVleet missed the entire 2025–26 season with a torn right ACL. His anticipated appearance is a significant step towards reclaiming Houston’s starting point guard role, but fantasy managers should separate returning to the floor from returning to a full workload.

Rockets Wire reports that VanVleet is expected to play only once across the two exhibitions. Houston and Dallas meet on 9 and 11 October at The Venetian Arena, with the NBA’s official preview setting up Friday’s opener.

A return expected, not a workload settled

The Athletic’s William Guillory anticipates VanVleet playing in Friday’s opener, which would be his first game since Houston’s Game 7 defeat to Golden State in the first round of the 2025 playoffs.

That points towards the first game, but the broader expectation of one appearance is firmer than any detailed playing-time plan. The reporting does not establish a specific minutes allowance for Macao.

VanVleet has also resisted treating one outing as the definitive verdict on his recovery. Speaking to Rockets Wire during training camp, he described the regular season as a process and stressed that his aim was to be at his best late in the campaign, rather than have every performance judged as a health assessment.

That distinction matters. A quiet exhibition would not establish that his recovery has stalled; an impressive one would not prove he can immediately sustain his previous responsibilities.

Houston gets its organiser back

The return is about more than adding another guard to the rotation. Houston spent last season asking Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard to carry responsibilities that would otherwise have belonged to VanVleet.

Houston Chronicle reporting, republished by Yahoo Sports, says Ime Udoka expects VanVleet to start when healthy. The projected group alongside him is Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Şengün.

Macao therefore offers an early look at how Houston divides the work: who brings the ball up, who initiates its half-court possessions and how often Thompson attacks after somebody else has created the opening. Those are useful observations, not settled conclusions about the regular-season rotation.

Sheppard’s adjustment is particularly relevant. The Athletic reports that Houston plans to use him more as an off-ball scoring threat with VanVleet and Marcus Smart available, rather than leaning as heavily on him to run the offence.

That is a change in responsibility, not confirmation of a smaller role. Houston still needs Sheppard’s shooting; the question is how Udoka accommodates it within a backcourt with more experienced ball-handlers.

Fantasy: watch the role before changing the valuation

For VanVleet, the useful signals are his minutes, the length of his shifts and subsequent updates on his availability. Starting is meaningful, but it is not the same as being ready for unrestricted playing time.

For Sheppard, watch who he shares the floor with and whether his possessions are built around shooting or initiating. Less organising could suit his scoring strengths, but fantasy value still depends on how much he plays.

Thompson’s on-ball opportunities also deserve attention. VanVleet’s presence changes the distribution of playmaking work; one exhibition cannot quantify the effect on Thompson’s assists or overall production.

The immediate takeaway is encouraging but limited: Houston expects its point guard back on court. Macao can show how the pieces begin to fit. It cannot, by itself, establish their full-season workloads.
