Arnas Velicka Expected to Miss Eight Weeks as Brisbane Adds Mawot Mag

Brisbane faces an extended absence for its lead playmaker, with Arnas Velicka reportedly targeting a return after the November FIBA window. Mawot Mag joins as Sam McDaniel’s injury replacement.

Brisbane’s offence faces a significant reshuffle, with Arnas Velicka expected to miss approximately eight weeks after suffering an injury against Cairns. The Bullets have also added forward Mawot Mag as an injury replacement for Sam McDaniel — a separate roster move that does not directly fill the gap at point guard.

Fox Sports, citing ESPN basketball insider Olgun Uluc, reports that Brisbane is targeting Velicka’s return after the November FIBA window. That is a reported recovery estimate, not a confirmed comeback date.

For coach Will Weaver, the immediate issue is replacing the organisation and passing of his lead guard while the rotation is already missing McDaniel.

An extended absence, not a short-term selection doubt

Velicka’s setback came in Brisbane’s 97–91 loss to the Taipans on 8 October. The ESPN box score records eight points, five rebounds and eight assists in 33 minutes for the Lithuanian guard.

Those eight assists underline why his absence matters beyond scoring. Even on a night when his shot was not falling, Velicka remained a substantial source of creation for Brisbane. Removing that passing from the line-up changes how the Bullets generate opportunities, rather than simply leaving a points total to replace.

Fox Sports also reports that Velicka had been managing an existing injury before the Cairns game. The report does not specify a diagnosis for the latest setback, so the eight-week estimate should not be treated as evidence of a particular injury or rehabilitation process.

The return target gives Brisbane a planning horizon. It does not establish which game he will play next, or whether he will immediately resume his previous workload.

Mag covers McDaniel’s absence

Sportando reports that Brisbane has announced Mag’s signing as an Injury Replacement Player for McDaniel. The former Cairns forward adds another option to the frontcourt rotation.

McDaniel is expected to miss up to six weeks with a lower-leg injury, a timetable also carried by the NBL’s official account when it reported Brisbane’s pursuit of Mag.

The distinction between the two absences is important. Mag has been brought in for McDaniel, not Velicka. His arrival adds forward depth, but it should not be read as Brisbane having secured a like-for-like replacement for its lead ball-handler.

That leaves two different tasks for Weaver: integrating another forward and reorganising the offence without Velicka.

Fantasy: replace the production, then assess the roles

For fantasy managers, the reported eight-week absence changes Velicka from a routine selection watch into an extended roster decision. In salary-cap formats, carrying an unavailable player for that length of time comes at a substantial cost; in draft leagues, an injured-reserve slot and bench depth will shape whether a hold is practical.

Mag is a role watch rather than an automatic fantasy replacement. His signing alone does not establish his minutes, starting status or offensive involvement.

Nor should Velicka’s assists simply be assigned to one remaining teammate. Brisbane’s next line-ups and distribution of ball-handling duties will provide better evidence than the transaction itself.
