Yaxel Lendeborg’s Preseason Surge Gives Warriors Fantasy Managers a Role to Watch

Yaxel Lendeborg posted 17 points and nine rebounds against the Lakers, but Steve Kerr’s demand for more scoring is the stronger fantasy signal. He belongs on watchlists, not in guaranteed-breakout territory.

Yaxel Lendeborg answered Golden State’s request for more aggression with 17 points and nine rebounds in 21 minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers. For fantasy managers, the important part is that Steve Kerr wants that scoring to become a feature of the rookie’s role, not an occasional bonus.

The Warriors won 124–98 at Chase Center on Tuesday, 6 October, with Lendeborg shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point range. He also contributed two assists and a block. NBA.com’s official roundup confirmed the scoring, rebounding and shooting line, while the San Francisco Chronicle’s report and box score recorded his 21:27 of playing time.

That is an encouraging preseason return. The combination of repeated rebounding production, first-unit opportunities and an explicit offensive assignment makes it worth watching beyond the highlights.

Kerr is asking for scoring, not just support

Lendeborg’s first exhibition against the Clippers produced four points on 1-of-6 shooting. Golden State’s response was not to ask him to retreat into a smaller offensive role.

Kerr and Stephen Curry wanted him to attack more. Against the Lakers, he did: his early scoring came around the basket, and all 17 of his points arrived before half-time.

“We need him to be a scorer,” Kerr said after the game, according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s coverage of the postgame interviews.

“We need him to get us easy buckets at the rim.”

The San Francisco Standard independently reported the same instruction, describing Lendeborg’s more decisive drives and improved willingness to take available shots.

That distinction matters in fantasy. A rookie can score well in an exhibition without being asked to reproduce that approach once the veterans take over. Here, the coach is actively pushing Lendeborg towards greater offensive involvement.

Lendeborg told reporters that adopting a score-first mentality would take adjustment after a lifetime of prioritising unselfish play. He also said advice from Curry and Draymond Green had helped his confidence after the opener. The production followed a clear instruction, rather than simply a hot shooting night.

The rebounds have survived two different scoring nights

The more consistent early number is on the glass.

Lendeborg collected nine rebounds against the Clippers and another nine against the Lakers. The Chronicle’s opening-game report recorded nine boards in roughly 19 minutes, despite his shooting struggles.

Across those two games, that is 18 rebounds in approximately 40 minutes. It is not a sustainable-rate forecast, but it does show that his contribution did not disappear when his shots failed to fall.

For category-league managers, rebounds are the clearest early reason to track him. Tuesday’s two made threes and block add interest, but neither establishes a dependable category strength from such a small sample. His efficient shooting against the Lakers is similarly encouraging without settling his regular-season percentages.

In points leagues, the appeal is broader: scoring and rebounding can both contribute to his value if the minutes hold. The unresolved issue is the workload, not whether one exhibition box score looks useful.

Golden State’s absences create opportunity, not a guarantee

Jimmy Butler remains out while rehabilitating his surgically repaired knee. NBC Sports Bay Area also reported uncertainty around Kristaps Porziņģis’ availability. Those circumstances help explain why Kerr is looking for scoring beyond Curry.

They do not establish Lendeborg as Golden State’s permanent second option.

The rookie started both preseason games, remaining in the first unit when Gui Santos replaced Al Horford against the Lakers. That is a meaningful early opportunity alongside Curry and Green. It is still a preseason opportunity, rather than confirmation of an opening-night starting spot or a fixed minutes allocation.

The opposition matters, too. The Lakers were short-handed; the Orange County Register reported that Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler were among their inactive players. Lendeborg’s decisive play deserves credit, but this was not a full-strength regular-season test.

Fantasy verdict: watch the role before chasing the line

Lendeborg belongs on fantasy watchlists, with late-round consideration in deeper drafts. That is our assessment of the opportunity, not a reported guarantee of production.

The next useful evidence is whether he keeps playing with the first unit, continues attacking rather than deferring, and earns reliable minutes against stronger opposition. Regular-season rotation decisions will matter more than another isolated preseason total.

For now, the case is stronger than a box-score blip: he has rebounded in both outings, responded to coaching and been told that Golden State needs his scoring. The watchlist signal is real. The breakout verdict can wait.
