Porziņģis Still Out Indefinitely: Kerr’s Small-Ball Warriors Are the Real Fantasy Story

Golden State have formally confirmed Kristaps Porziņģis remains out indefinitely. Steve Kerr is leaning towards Draymond Green at centre, while Yaxel Lendeborg, Gui Santos and Brandin Podziemski are building a case for opening-night roles. The minutes matter more than a premature return prediction.

Golden State have moved from an uncertain preseason absence to an explicit club statement: Kristaps Porziņģis remains out indefinitely. That is not the same as announcing he will miss the entire season, but it is a clear warning against treating his opening-night availability as a safe assumption. The more useful basketball question now is how Steve Kerr intends to cover the frontcourt minutes without him.

The Warriors’ official statement, published 14 October, confirms Porziņģis missed training camp and the first five preseason games because of a health-related matter. He visited the practice facility on Tuesday and met general manager Mike Dunleavy and the club’s head of player health and performance, Dr Rick Celebrini. The club says he will remain around the team, but has not announced a return to practice, a playing date or a recovery timetable. The details of the medical discussion are private. There is no responsible basis for assigning a diagnosis or an invented number of games missed.

Kerr’s smaller five is becoming a genuine option

Before the latest club statement, Kerr had already indicated he was leaning towards a starting group of Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos, rookie Yaxel Lendeborg and Draymond Green at centre. That was a preference, not a locked opening-night team. His comments, reported on 12 October, also explained why veteran Al Horford is easier to deploy from the bench: Kerr wants to manage his workload around 20 minutes a game and keep either Horford or Green available as a defensive organiser.

The distinction matters. Porziņģis’ absence does not create one straightforward replacement who inherits all his minutes. It changes the shape of the rotation. Green may start at five, Horford may anchor reserve units, Lendeborg and Santos can provide size on the wings, and a traditional reserve centre remains useful against bigger opponents. A small starting five and a large bench unit can coexist. Fantasy analysis should therefore focus on actual substitution patterns rather than simply adding Porziņģis’ hypothetical minutes to one player.

The Lakers game gives a first measurable clue

Golden State’s 101–89 preseason win over the Lakers in Las Vegas on 13 October supplied useful, if still incomplete, evidence. The official NBA box score recorded 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in 25:37 for Lendeborg. Podziemski also scored 17, with five rebounds in 26:02; Santos had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists in 23:45. Reserve centre Charles Bassey logged 26:59, collecting 12 rebounds and three blocks. These are real preseason outputs, not fantasy projections.

Green was rested and Horford did not play in that contest, so the 13 October minute distribution is not a full dress rehearsal for Kerr’s preferred rotation. Bassey’s substantial workload is a reason to monitor him, not evidence that he will play 27 minutes when Green and Horford are available. Likewise, Lendeborg’s production is encouraging, but a rookie’s defensive assignments, fouls and ability to stay on the floor against first-choice NBA opponents will determine how reliably those minutes survive.

Who actually gains fantasy relevance?

Lendeborg is the most interesting role watch, because he combines a plausible starting opportunity with rebounding, secondary passing and the ability to operate away from the basket. The box score establishes that he can contribute across categories; it does not establish his regular-season usage or efficiency. His path is strongest if Kerr continues trusting him alongside Green rather than reducing his role once the rotation tightens.

Santos is a minutes-and-versatility watch. His inclusion in Kerr’s proposed five matters more than the ten points against the Lakers. He may help connect possessions and defend multiple positions, but a low-shot role could make him more valuable to Golden State than to fantasy managers seeking consistent scoring. Podziemski has the clearest perimeter opportunity in the proposed lineup, although his assists and scoring will still be influenced by Curry’s ball-handling load. None of these roles should be advertised as a guaranteed fantasy breakout.

Green and Horford are different decisions. Green at centre could strengthen his opportunity for rebounds, defensive activity and facilitating from the middle of the floor, while also exposing him to physical match-ups and foul pressure. Horford’s possible bench role is not a demotion in importance, but Kerr’s publicly discussed minutes management is a meaningful ceiling to respect. Bassey belongs on a watchlist only until the club shows he has a repeatable role with the veteran bigs active.

The next checks are simple — and more useful than speculation

Watch the final preseason rotation, the Warriors’ first official availability report and the opening-night line-up against the Lakers on 21 October in the United States. Most importantly, separate starts from minutes: a 20-minute starter and a 25-minute reserve can have very different fantasy value from what the team sheet suggests. Check whether Lendeborg closes competitive stretches, whether Green’s centre minutes hold up against size, and whether Horford’s workload remains near the coach’s stated target.

Porziņģis’ return could change all of those allocations, but there is currently no verified date to model. The actionable conclusion is not to predict his health. It is to treat Golden State’s small-ball configuration as a real, testable early-season rotation and keep each fantasy decision conditional on evidence. The latest announcement is a meaningful update to the earlier absence story — not confirmation of a season-ending injury or a permanent starting five.
