Tyrese Haliburton is expected to make his first appearance against another team since tearing his right Achilles in the 2025 NBA Finals when Indiana faces Minnesota on Wednesday, 7 October, at Iowa State’s Hilton Coliseum.
It is a significant step for the Pacers and fantasy managers waiting on their star point guard. But the return comes with an important distinction: Haliburton wants to play at least the first half; coach Rick Carlisle has not announced how many minutes he will receive.
The Indianapolis Star’s reporting from Tuesday’s practice says Carlisle declined to specify the workload for Haliburton or Indiana’s other starters. ESPN independently reported that Haliburton was unsure how long he would play, while hoping to appear for at least the opening half.
A return against opponents, not his first basketball activity
Haliburton tore his Achilles in Game 7 against Oklahoma City in June 2025 and missed the entire 2025–26 season. NBA.com’s preseason coverage confirms that absence and notes his stated confidence that he is fully healthy heading into this season.
He has already been playing against teammates. On Sunday, he participated in Indiana’s FanJam scrimmage, with the Star reporting eight points and four assists in the 12-minute exhibition.
Minnesota therefore represents a different milestone: his first game against outside opposition since the injury, rather than his first time back on a court.
The setting adds another layer. Haliburton played at Iowa State from 2018 to 2020, and ESPN reports that he purchased tickets for the student section, with the university allocating them through a lottery. Carlisle said the game had originally been planned for 2025 before the injury prompted its postponement.
What to watch: workload before the box score
The first useful detail will be how Carlisle structures Haliburton’s appearances: the length of his opening stint, whether he returns for another run and whether he plays beyond half-time. Those are things to observe, not a rotation plan Indiana has confirmed.
The Star reports that the Pacers do not expect many restrictions for Haliburton this season. That is encouraging, but it does not establish a minutes target for Wednesday or guarantee a particular regular-season workload.
A short preseason outing would not, by itself, demonstrate an injury-related limit. Carlisle has also left the other starters’ minutes unspecified. Equally, a productive first half would not settle every question about Haliburton’s workload across a full season.
Beyond minutes, the basketball questions are straightforward: how comfortably he initiates the offence against a different defence, how he handles changes of pace and how Indiana’s possessions flow with him directing play again. Those observations will provide context, not a medical assessment of his recovery.
Fantasy takeaway: encouraging status, unfinished workload picture
For fantasy managers, the expected appearance is a positive availability update. It moves the discussion from a season spent sidelined to watching Haliburton compete against another NBA team.
It is not yet a reason to assume his old workload has been restored. The useful next information is Carlisle’s actual deployment and any subsequent clarification about regular-season minutes or availability.
The return is the headline. The workload is still the question.
