LeBron James made his first preseason game appearance for the Philadelphia 76ers against the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, 8 October, starting alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe. For Philadelphia, the milestone was bigger than a new uniform: its full projected starting five was finally together against another NBA team.

The Associated Press confirmed James’ debut and the five starters, following NBA.com’s earlier report on Philadelphia’s plans. Coach Nick Nurse said he expected to play his starters for about half the game — a planned workload, not a confirmed minutes total.

Philadelphia’s new lineup gets its first test

James joined Philadelphia through free agency during the offseason, while Brown arrived in a trade with the Boston Celtics, according to NBA.com. Thursday brought those additions together with Embiid, Maxey and Edgecombe in a preseason starting lineup for the first time.

That distinction matters. Brown had already made his Sixers preseason debut, but James, Embiid and Maxey were healthy scratches for Monday’s opener against the New York Knicks. Brooklyn offered Nurse an opportunity to begin assessing the complete unit rather than another version missing several central pieces.

James is 41 and entering his NBA-record 24th season, the AP reported. His first game for Philadelphia is an obvious headline moment, but the more useful basketball question is how the five starters share possessions and responsibilities.

As a lineup-building exercise, the priorities are straightforward: establish who initiates the offence, how the others move when they are not handling the ball, and which combinations Nurse wants to keep together. Those are questions this preseason can help answer, not conclusions established simply by naming five starters.

Brown had already provided an encouraging opening

Philadelphia beat New York 120–97 in its preseason opener, with Brown scoring 22 points in 17 minutes. NBC Sports Philadelphia’s recap documented that performance and the absences of James, Embiid and Maxey.

Brown’s productive first outing gave the Sixers something to build on. It did not, however, show how the full starting group would function. Adding three major teammates changes the context in which Nurse evaluates the offence; Thursday’s significance was getting that shared evaluation underway.

A game debut, not his first time on Philadelphia’s court

James had already participated in Philadelphia’s public scrimmage on 3 October. NBA.com covered that appearance, so the Brooklyn milestone should be understood precisely: his first preseason game for the Sixers, rather than his first appearance in front of Philadelphia fans.

The regular-season opener is scheduled for 20 October against the Knicks in New York. Before then, the task is to turn a high-profile collection of players into a connected starting unit.

Thursday supplied the first preseason opportunity to do that with all five projected starters. It was a starting point for Philadelphia’s chemistry, not yet a verdict on it.
