Kyrie Irving is set to play his first game in 19 months, with Dallas Mavericks coach Dusty May confirming the guard will appear in one of the team’s two preseason games against the Houston Rockets in Macao, China.

The return would end an absence stretching back to March 2025, when Irving tore his left ACL. But Dallas has not chosen which game he will play, and the announcement does not establish an unrestricted game workload.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, 8 October, May said the decision between Friday’s opener and Sunday’s rematch would depend on how Irving’s body feels, including his response to the travel and jet lag, according to The Athletic’s reporting from Macao.

One appearance planned, not two

Dallas and Houston meet at The Venetian Arena on 9 and 11 October as part of the NBA China Games. The dates and venue are confirmed in event organiser Sands China’s announcement.

May’s plan is for Irving to play only once across those two fixtures. Neither a specific minutes allocation nor a rotation plan for his appearance has been announced in the reporting cited here.

That distinction matters. Returning to competition is a significant step after such a long rehabilitation, but it is not the same as demonstrating readiness for a full regular-season workload. The confirmed development is an intended preseason appearance, with the timing still to be settled.

Calf setback extended his recovery

Irving last played on 3 March 2025 against Sacramento. The knee injury ended his 2024-25 season, and he subsequently missed the entire 2025-26 campaign.

On Thursday, Irving also explained why an attempted return last season had been delayed. He said a Grade 2 calf strain suffered in December limited his rehabilitation for about eight weeks, pushing his recovery timeline back further. That account was reported by The Athletic and Yahoo Sports.

The calf strain is an explanation for the earlier setback, not a newly announced injury affecting his availability in Macao. Dallas ultimately ruled him out for the remainder of last season in February.

Irving eager to move beyond practice

Irving told reporters his conditioning was progressing well and that practice contact and scrimmages had helped him assess where he stood physically. He also stressed that those sessions could not fully reproduce a game, Reuters reported.

For Dallas, that makes this more than an ordinary preseason outing: it is the first opportunity in 19 months to see Irving compete against another team rather than work through practice possessions.

For fantasy managers, the useful update is the move towards game availability—not a confirmed minutes projection. His appearance and any subsequent workload guidance will provide more useful evidence than the return announcement alone.

The milestone is substantial. The next details to watch are which game Dallas selects and how much Irving plays.
