Illawarra Are Talking to Derrick Walton Jr — What a Return Would Mean for NBL27 Fantasy

Illawarra are reportedly in discussions with former Championship Series MVP Derrick Walton Jr as they seek a point guard. No deal is confirmed. Here is how a possible return could affect Milton Doyle, Tyler Harvey and William Hickey — and why Round 6 fantasy managers should wait for real selection evidence.

Reporting checked at 12:59am ACDT, Friday 16 October 2026. The Illawarra–Walton discussions are reported, not a completed signing. No contract, registration, debut date or minutes allocation has been confirmed.

The Illawarra Hawks are exploring a move for former NBL Championship Series MVP Derrick Walton Jr. That is an important NBL27 fantasy development, but it is not yet a transaction. On 15 October, the NBL reported that ESPN's Olgun Uluc had identified Walton as a player in active discussions with Illawarra while the club searches the import market for a point guard. The Hawks have a roster opening after parting ways with Darius Days early in the season. There has been no announcement that Walton has agreed to terms, passed a medical or been cleared to play.

The fantasy question is therefore two-stage: what would a genuine lead organiser change for Illawarra, and what should managers do before anything is official? A premature waiver claim or SuperCoach move based on a negotiation is not the same as responding to a signed player with a defined role.

Why Walton is a credible fit, not a guaranteed fantasy saviour

Walton's NBL history explains the interest. The league's 15 October report records 34 games with Sydney's NBL23 championship side and 18 more with South East Melbourne in NBL25. Across those two spells, the league credits him with averages of 14.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists. He made the All-NBL First Team in his Sydney season and won the Larry Sengstock Medal as Championship Series MVP. Those are career figures from previous seasons, not a forecast of what he would produce in October 2026.

The historical playmaking is the important part. During his Sydney stint, coach Chase Buford described Walton as the team's steadying force, someone able to create a good possession when the offence became stuck. Illawarra's interest in a point guard, rather than a like-for-like forward replacement for Days, suggests a possible change in how the Hawks want to distribute ball-handling. That is an interpretation of the reported recruitment brief, not confirmation of coach Justin Tatum's eventual plans.

The existing Hawks guards are the immediate fantasy story

Illawarra already list Milton Doyle, Tyler Harvey, William Hickey and Kyle Adnam among their guards on the official club roster. In the NBL's September SuperCoach team analysis, Doyle and Harvey were identified as major offensive barometers, while Hickey was profiled as a high-minutes, multi-category contributor. That preseason assessment is background, not proof of their exact Round 5 usage.

If Walton signed and earned primary creation duties, the first pressure point could be on-ball possessions, not necessarily the headline scoring totals. Doyle, Harvey and Hickey might still play substantial minutes, but some initiation and assist opportunities would need to be shared. Equally, a reliable organiser could improve shot quality for players who spend more time finishing possessions. Those two effects can coexist. It would be a mistake to declare any existing guard a fantasy loser before the Hawks have even announced a deal.

This is also why Walton's own upside is difficult to price in. His past NBL assist production gives managers a reason to watch him, but there is no verified NBL27 role, no current minutes baseline and no confirmed SuperCoach price or draft eligibility for a hypothetical return. His NBL25 campaign also included a high-grade hamstring injury, but that historical absence is not evidence of a current injury. Current fitness and availability require a fresh club update.

The schedule makes this a Round 6 watch, not a Round 5 shortcut

Illawarra's remaining Round 5 game is against Melbourne United on Sunday 18 October. Their Round 6 schedule includes Sydney on Thursday 22 October and Brisbane on Saturday 24 October, according to the official NBL fixture. A two-game round could make a newly established lead guard relevant very quickly. But the timetable works only if a deal happens, registration is completed and the player is selected. None of those steps should be assumed as at this report.

There is a broader team reason to pay attention. Illawarra entered Round 5 at 1–6 and with a league-reported defensive rating of 132.1 points conceded per 100 possessions, as detailed in Buckets' existing Hawks matchup analysis. A new point guard could help their offensive organisation; it would not, by itself, fix the defence. That distinction matters when assessing whether a possible signing transforms the whole team or simply redistributes fantasy opportunities.

What managers should actually do

SuperCoach: Do not trade in Walton on the basis of reported talks, and do not sell Doyle, Harvey or Hickey purely because a new guard is being discussed. Check the final Round 5 team sheet, then watch for a formal signing, official player listing, Round 6 selection and any coach comments about minutes. If Walton arrives, reassess each existing guard's creation role rather than assuming his points disappear.

Fantasy Draft: Treat Walton as a watchlist candidate where your league permits it, not as a universally available waiver target. League pools, eligibility and acquisition rules differ. Managers with Doyle or Hickey should hold their current roles under review; a credible replacement for a ball-handling job would be more significant than a rumour alone. If a signing is confirmed, the next question is whether Walton starts, closes games and runs the offence alongside or instead of the established guards.

The Buckets call: The reported pursuit is worth covering because the Hawks are looking for a point guard with a genuine NBL playmaking record. The actionable signal is not his former MVP medal; it is a signed contract followed by a real rotation. Until then, this is a meaningful recruitment watch — not a fantasy recommendation to make a transaction tonight.
