Evidence checked: Friday 16 October 2026, approximately 3pm Adelaide time (ACDT), before Tasmania–Adelaide tips off at 7pm ACDT. This is a pre-game report. Final team sheets, injuries and any coaching changes should be rechecked before publication; do not publish it unchanged after tip-off.
Adelaide will face ladder-leading Tasmania on Friday night without head coach Trevor Gleeson on the sideline. The club has granted Gleeson leave for a family commitment, and senior assistant Mark Marinovic will lead the 36ers at MyState Bank Arena. Adelaide expects Gleeson to return for next week's game against South East Melbourne. The NBL's 16 October confirmation describes a planned one-game handover, not a change of head coach or a reported dispute.
For NBL27 fantasy managers, that distinction matters. A different voice directing substitutions is worth observing, particularly for a team still adjusting to injuries and a demanding offensive hierarchy. It is not, on its own, evidence that Bryce Cotton will lose touches, that a bench player will start or that Adelaide will abandon its existing rotations. Treat the coaching news as a reason to watch tonight's minutes, not as a reason to invent a trade.
Marinovic is not arriving cold
Marinovic is Adelaide's senior assistant, not an emergency appointment from outside the programme. According to the league's announcement, he worked with Serbia's bronze-medal-winning coaching staff at the 2024 Paris Olympics and has already led the 36ers during the NBL Blitz, including a win over Cairns. That background offers continuity, but preseason experience cannot tell us how he will manage a tight regular-season contest against Tasmania.
The stronger baseline is Adelaide's most recent completed game. In Sunday's 84–78 victory over Sydney, Cotton recorded 17 points and eight assists, John Jenkins III scored 20 points with six made three-pointers, Matt Kenyon supplied 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists, Nick Rakocevic posted 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Zylan Cheatham added 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Those numbers come from the NBL's game report. The supporting cast mattered as much as the marquee scorer.
The real fantasy questions are still availability and role
The official Friday match preview lists Flynn Cameron (ankle) as a test, Isaac Humphries (knee) as out and Bul Kuol (ACL) as out. Cameron's test designation is not a confirmed clearance, especially given earlier, more cautious club reporting. Adelaide's frontcourt therefore still requires attention, but no new injury was caused or announced by Gleeson's absence. Buckets' existing Round 5 Injury Report sets out the broader uncertainty and should be read alongside any later team announcement.
Cotton: His role as Adelaide's lead creator is supported by completed games, and one match under Marinovic does not establish a change to his usage. The fantasy question is whether the 36ers share enough creation to avoid requiring another exceptionally heavy Cotton workload. Watch actual time on court, assists and who initiates possessions when he rests. Do not manufacture a projected score from the coaching change.
Rakocevic and Cheatham: Humphries' confirmed absence keeps Adelaide's established frontcourt players relevant. Their Sydney contributions were broad rather than reliant on one hot shooting spell. What matters against Tasmania is whether their rebounding, defensive responsibility and offensive touches persist against Will Magnay and a JackJumpers side with a strong start to NBL27. Neither player's eligibility, price nor breakeven should be assumed from this report.
Jenkins and Kenyon: Sunday's contributions gave Adelaide additional ways to score and defend. Jenkins attempted 17 three-pointers against Sydney, according to the league's follow-up. That volume is worth monitoring; it is not a sustainable shooting forecast. Kenyon's two-way role is likewise more informative than assuming his last box score repeats. The key evidence tonight will be their minutes and whether their responsibilities survive different game states.
Tasmania's double makes the fixture comparison more important
Tasmania play Adelaide on Friday and New Zealand on Sunday; Adelaide have only one Round 5 game. The official NBL fixture and match preview confirm the schedule. That is a material SuperCoach consideration independent of who coaches Adelaide. Healthy, established Tasmania players have two opportunities to score this round, while a strong Adelaide single-game performance still has to be weighed against fixture volume.
Tasmania's own selection is not entirely settled. The Friday preview lists Ben Ayre (hip flexor) as a test, with Majok Deng and Bryce Hamilton out. That is another reason not to assign extra ball-handling or bench minutes before teams are confirmed. In draft leagues, monitor any real rotation change after the game; do not claim a speculative replacement is available on every waiver wire.
Buckets verdict: monitor, don't overreact
The confirmed story is straightforward: Gleeson misses Friday's game for a family commitment, Marinovic takes charge, and the club expects Gleeson back next week. The fantasy story is narrower: keep the focus on availability, actual minutes, established responsibilities and the one-game-versus-two-game Round 5 split. If Marinovic makes a meaningful rotation adjustment, it will become an evidence-based talking point after the game, not before it. Until then, this is important NBL team news, not a licence to redraw Adelaide's fantasy depth chart.
