The Adelaide 36ers have moved to reinforce an injury-hit backcourt, signing veteran New Zealand guard Corey Webster as an injury replacement.

The 36ers confirmed the move after a difficult opening stretch that has left Adelaide at 2-3, with Webster bringing championship experience, perimeter shooting and another reliable ball-handler to a roster missing key pieces.

Adelaide has also said Webster is expected to suit up against Melbourne United on Wednesday, 7 October, pending his arrival and final preparations.

Why Adelaide needed another guard

Flynn Cameron has been sidelined since the season opener with an ankle injury, and the latest club update suggests he could still be another four to six weeks away. Adelaide is also managing significant absences elsewhere on the roster, including Isaac Humphries' knee issue and Bul Kuol's ACL injury.

That has placed an enormous creation burden on Bryce Cotton while forcing the 36ers to find enough shooting and decision-making around him.

Webster addresses both needs immediately. He is not being signed to replace Cotton's role as the primary offensive engine, but he can help take some pressure off him by handling the ball, organising possessions and punishing defenders who help too aggressively.

The fit also comes with useful familiarity. Webster previously shared the backcourt with Cotton at Perth, while he has played alongside Cameron for New Zealand.

Webster can still score

Webster arrives with 13 NBL seasons and three championships on his résumé. Adelaide lists him as a 188-centimetre guard, and the 37-year-old has remained productive since his most recent NBL stint.

Playing for the Manawatu Jets in New Zealand, Webster averaged 18.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 40.2 per cent from three. Those numbers line up neatly with what Adelaide needs most: another guard who can create enough offence to matter without needing every possession to run through him.

The NBL's announcement also highlighted his experience across 13 NBL seasons and his three championships with the New Zealand Breakers.

NBL27 Fantasy Draft impact

For NBL27 Draft leagues, Webster is immediately worth monitoring and can be a speculative add in deeper formats where useful guards are already scarce.

The short-term opportunity is obvious. Cameron's continued absence creates a window for Webster to play meaningful rotation minutes straight away, and Adelaide badly needs extra shooting and secondary creation.

The ceiling, however, depends on how quickly Webster is trusted with the ball and whether he closes games. Cotton will remain the dominant creator, and Webster's role could tighten again when Cameron returns.

That makes Webster more of a role-and-minutes bet than an automatic must-add in shallow leagues. If he is seeing mid-20s minutes, handling second-unit possessions and getting five or more three-point attempts per game, the fantasy case becomes much stronger.

NBL SuperCoach impact

For SuperCoach, the first game is more informative than the signing itself.

Webster's scoring profile is interesting, but fantasy coaches should avoid assuming his New Zealand production will transfer directly into the NBL. His price, minutes, starting status and ball-handling share will determine whether he becomes a genuine cash-generation or trade target.

The key question is not whether he can score. It is whether Adelaide gives him enough opportunity to accumulate across points, assists and threes while sharing the floor with Cotton.

What to watch against Melbourne

If Webster is cleared to play on Wednesday night, four things matter immediately:

  • Minutes: does he walk straight into a substantial rotation role?
  • On-ball usage: is he simply spacing the floor, or actually initiating offence?
  • Three-point volume: Adelaide signed him partly to keep defences honest, so attempts matter.
  • Closing role: being on court late would be the strongest early signal that Trevor Gleeson trusts him.

Webster is not just veteran depth for an injury crisis. He is a proven NBL guard joining a team that needs exactly what he does best.

The first game should tell fantasy coaches whether that need turns into a meaningful NBL27 role.
