Charlotte has ruled Coby White out of the preseason with a left calf strain. With no return date announced, the projected starting point guard’s availability for the 21 October opener remains unresolved.

Coby White will miss Charlotte’s entire preseason after suffering a left calf strain during training camp, interrupting his preparation for an expected starting-point-guard role following LaMelo Ball’s departure.

The Hornets announced the injury on Monday, 5 October. They have not provided a return date, leaving White’s availability for the regular-season opener at Brooklyn on 21 October uncertain — not ruled out.

For Charlotte, the immediate cost is losing preseason game time with its projected lead guard. For fantasy managers, the distinction matters: White has a confirmed preseason absence, but there is no confirmed regular-season absence yet.

What Charlotte has confirmed

The Hornets’ announcement, reproduced by HoopsHype, identifies a left calf strain sustained in camp and rules White out of the team’s preseason games. Charlotte said further updates would be issued as appropriate.

Both ESPN and the Associated Press report carried by Sportsnet corroborate the injury and preseason absence. The AP report also identifies the Brooklyn opener as an unresolved availability question.

The announcement does not establish the strain’s grade or a recovery timetable. That leaves no sound basis for declaring White ready for opening night, or projecting how many regular-season games he might miss.

A new starting role loses its rehearsal

White was expected to take over at point guard after Charlotte traded Ball to Minnesota during the offseason, according to the AP report. ESPN’s transaction log independently records Ball’s departure.

That makes this more consequential than a routine preseason scratch. Charlotte is changing who initiates its offence, and White will not have exhibition games to work through that responsibility with the reshaped roster.

The injury delays those preparations; it does not, by itself, change his projected role when healthy. Nor has Charlotte’s announcement established a replacement starting lineup for the regular season.

Dennis Schröder is the experienced alternative to monitor. Charlotte acquired him from Cleveland during the offseason, a move also recorded in ESPN’s transaction log. CBS Sports’ injury update identifies Schröder and Christian Anderson as guards who could receive more playing time if White’s absence extends beyond preseason.

That remains a conditional opportunity, not an announced redistribution of regular-season minutes.

Fantasy: price the uncertainty, not an invented timetable

White’s expected starting role remains relevant to his fantasy appeal, but managers can no longer use preseason appearances to assess how that role translates into minutes and production.

In drafts, the practical response is to account for uncertain early availability rather than assume either a lengthy lay-off or an opening-night return. Managers who already roster White should follow Charlotte’s next medical update before making a move based solely on the preseason ruling.

Schröder belongs on the watchlist, not automatically in the starting lineup of a fantasy team. His short-term opportunity would become clearer if White is ruled out of regular-season games and Charlotte confirms its backcourt rotation.

The next meaningful checkpoint is White’s status for 21 October. Until then, the confirmed news is limited but important: Charlotte’s projected starting point guard will miss every preseason game, and his return date remains unannounced.
