Ariel Hukporti’s first preseason appearance for Philadelphia lasted less than five minutes before a non-contact right-leg injury forced him off the court, adding another availability concern to the Sixers’ depleted centre rotation.
Coach Nick Nurse said after Monday’s 120–97 win over the New York Knicks that Hukporti would undergo imaging on his right Achilles on Tuesday, 6 October. The post-game reports did not establish a confirmed diagnosis, the extent of the injury or a return timetable.
That distinction matters. Philadelphia has an immediate depth problem to monitor, but there is not yet a verified basis in those reports to describe Hukporti’s injury as season-ending.
What happened against the Knicks
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Hukporti went down on a defensive possession with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter and immediately reached for his lower right leg. He needed assistance to leave the floor.
The Philadelphia Inquirer independently reported the non-contact incident and Nurse’s plan for further imaging. Knicks centre Karl-Anthony Towns, Hukporti’s former teammate, was among those who helped him towards the locker room.
Hukporti had started in place of Joel Embiid. The appearance was an opportunity to make his case for a larger role after joining Philadelphia on a one-year deal following two seasons with New York.
Instead, the Sixers left their opening exhibition waiting for medical clarity on a player competing for minutes behind their starting centre. Concern from teammates and coaches underlined the seriousness of the moment; it did not establish the diagnosis.
Why Philadelphia’s backup minutes are in focus
Hukporti and Adem Bona entered camp competing for the primary backup-centre role. Bona’s own availability has already complicated that contest.
ESPN reported that Bona had not participated in training camp after suffering a left foot sprain while playing for Turkey. The Inquirer also identified the foot sprain as the reason he had missed most of camp.
Philadelphia was without Tacko Fall against the Knicks as well. NBC Sports Philadelphia’s game report listed Fall with a left hip strain and noted that the Sixers had not set a specific return timeline for Bona.
Embiid’s absence should be separated from those injuries: ESPN reported that he was healthy during camp and was given the night off by Nurse.
After Hukporti exited, Jabari Walker filled in as a smaller frontcourt option, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds in 19 minutes. That provided a solution for the exhibition, not proof that Philadelphia has settled its regular-season backup rotation.
The immediate issue is how many conventional centres Nurse can get back on the floor. If Hukporti misses further time while Bona and Fall remain unavailable, the Sixers would have fewer options to test behind Embiid during preseason.
Fantasy takeaway: wait for the medical update
For fantasy managers, this is an availability watch rather than an automatic waiver-wire move.
Bona’s recovery remains part of the equation, and Walker’s productive preseason outing does not establish a secure regular-season role. Any assessment of additional minutes needs to follow the medical updates and Nurse’s subsequent rotation choices.
The next meaningful development is the result of Hukporti’s imaging. Until the injury’s extent and his availability are clarified, projecting a prolonged absence—or declaring a replacement the clear fantasy beneficiary—would run ahead of the confirmed reporting.
